Residual terrain model and its application for testing of gravity field models

The aim of this paper is to compare the several methods of computation of the gravitational effect of the residual terrain model (RTM) on gravity. The gravitational effect of RTM was computed in spherical approximation using spherical tesseroids, polyhedral bodies and in planar approximation using ERTM2160 model (Hirt et al., 2014). The gravitational effect of the single tesseroid was computed using formulae derived by several authors. The differences between formulae are shown and discussed. The gravitational effect of RTM is used for testing the global geopotential models in terms of gravity and, on the other hand, the accuracy of local gravity value reconstruction from the global geopotential model and RTM effect is estimated. The comparison of different methods for computing the effect of RTM was carried out on a large set of measured gravity values situated in Slovakia.
