This paper evaluates the most recent Global Geopotential Models (GGM) derived from GOCE as well as GRACE, satellite altimetry and gravity data. EGM2008 is also included as a reference model. They are all evaluated in the south-west area of Tierra del Fuego.There exist a lake called Fagnano which runs east-west and Mean Lake Level (MLL) observations are available on it. They serve as test data for GGMs because this information is located in a region of difficult access, in the mid of the southern Andes, where there is no observed gravity data. GGMs like EGM2008 has fill-in data in this area.
Thus this a suitable area not also for the evaluation of GGMs but for the evaluation of improved geopotential models through the Residual Terrain Modeling (RTM) technique.
According to the results of this work, the GGMs show a significant improvement when adding RTM information at a certain degree which not always coincides with its maximum degree of the spherical harmonics expansion.
