GRACE Follow-On Ranging Instrument Analysis (Microwave and Laser Interferometry)

Abstract

The primary measurement for GRACE and GRACE Follow-On missions is low-low satellite to satellite tracking. A comparison of the observation models for the laser ranging instrument (LRI) and the microwave K/Ka-band ranging (KBR) instrument will be presented. The observation models include noise analysis such as system noise, frequency noise, pointing induced noise and other noise sources. We will present processing methods for ranging data from raw observations such as phase data of the microwave ranging instrument. We will compare the ranging data available from GPS and KBR and their dependencies on ultra-stable oscillator. The final results will contribute to assess the possible improvements for the KBR observation model and data processing.
