Space and frequency domain validation schemes are presented for current satellite-only and combined gravity field models. The assessment procedures include an in-orbit closed loop simulation as well as standard spectral and spatial statistical tools applied to the discrete values of the potential harmonic coefficient sets of the different models. We present representative implementations using a selection of the most recent gravity models. Since the coefficient-wise insertion of the examined gravity models and the computation of their cumulative effect is the common asset of the applied assessment tools, an identification of characteristic spectral bandwidths of the different models is the final objective. This facilitates further the exploitation of this information to local or regional studies, where known tectonic characteristics can be incorporated.
