Re-assessment of GRACE sensor observation models and impact on gravity field parameter estimation

Abstract

Recent investigations have addressed data quality inhomogeneity and modeling issues for the GRACE sensors. For attitude modeling, the weighting in the combination of the two star cameras and the fusion with angular acceleration measurements has been investigated. For the microwave ranging, we are currently studying systematics in the signal-to-noise ratio. For the accelerometers, environmental disturbances are a significant source of inhomogeneity. These effects are superimposed and entangled with other effects in the gravity field parameter estimation. We re-assess the effects on the level of sensor observation models and study whether postfit residuals from the least-squares adjustment can be used to trace the impact of individual error contributions. We discuss possible improvements in view of the GRACE Follow-On data analysis
